1 Hotel Melbourne, located at 9-11 Maritime Place in Docklands, offers guests prime access to some of Melbourne’s top attractions, including Marvel Stadium, the Royal Botanic Gardens, South Wharf, and world-class theatres. The hotel boasts 277 guest rooms, including 36 suites, along with a soon-to-be-announced signature restaurant, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and a wellness spa.
Since its launch in 2015, 1 Hotels has focused on sustainability as a key element of its global expansion. The brand incorporates smart thermostats and sustainably sourced materials in its properties, alongside a commitment to integrating natural elements and local history into its design.
A standout feature of the Melbourne hotel is the heritage-listed Goods Shed No. 5, the last unrenovated goods shed from Melbourne’s former bustling port. The hotel’s striking asymmetrical façade features floor-to-ceiling windows with lower glazing reflecting the shed’s panels, while the upper glazing mirrors the rippling surface of the Yarra River.
The hotel’s interiors follow the same design philosophy, with over 2,000 living plants throughout the building. Bedheads made from reclaimed timber railway bridges, live-edge furniture, and doors with preserved moss panels further enhance the natural theme.
Barry Sternlicht, founder of 1 Hotels, explained, “At 1 Hotels, we believe that luxury and sustainability can and should go hand in hand.” He added, “With 1 Hotel Melbourne, we’ve created a waterfront destination that immerses guests in nature while celebrating the city’s rich legacy and forward-thinking spirit.”
The hotel is also home to the Seafarers Event Space, a 1,000-square-meter riverside venue capable of hosting up to 900 guests. Additional meeting spaces, including a boardroom and a relaxed lounge, provide flexible options for both corporate and social events.
Managed by Starwood Hotels, which operates 1 Hotels globally, the Melbourne property marks an important milestone in the brand’s expansion into Australia. Starwood Hotels CEO Raul Leal described the opening as “an exciting milestone” in bringing mission-driven hospitality to the region, emphasizing the hotel’s focus on sustainability and exceptional guest experiences.
