Britannia Hotels, known for owning more than 60 hotels across the UK, has seen a drop in profits despite an increase in turnover. The chain, which owns The Grand in Llandudno—rated as one of the worst hotels in the seaside town on Tripadvisor—has finally started investing in improvements after years of complaints about the hotel’s condition.
The company also owns the Pontins holiday park brand and, in November 2023, closed its Prestatyn site. Despite repeated requests for information on the future of the park, Britannia Hotels has not provided any positive updates.
For the past decade, the brand has ranked at the bottom of Which? hotel chain rankings but has continued to operate profitably. Part of its financial success is due to UK Government contracts to house asylum seekers in its hotels, though no facilities in North Wales have been used for this purpose.
According to the latest financial reports filed with Companies House, Britannia Hotels’ pre-tax profits have fallen to £31.3 million, down from £39.3 million the previous year. However, turnover for the financial year ending March 30, 2024, rose to £164 million, up from £154 million in 2023. The company described this increase as a “credible performance” amid challenging market conditions.
